Superangel VC invested in Finnish AR startup Doublepoint

Estonian fund Superangel VC invested in Finnish AR startup Doublepoint. A €3M investment round was backed by the cofounder of Estonian intelligent revenue management unicorn Pipedrive Timo Rein, UK fund FOV Ventures, Finnish venture fund Superhero Capital, and other investors.

In 2020, entrepreneurs Lauri Tuominen, Jamin Hu, and Ohto Pentikä founded Doublepoint in Helsinki. The startup develops software to turn Android Wear OS-powered smartwatches into gesture input devices for Augmented Reality, consumer electronics, and more. Hand position and movement in devices can be measured in many ways, including wristbands, rings, RADAR, LIDAR, and cameras.

With the help of built-in IMU sensors (they are used to detect movements and measure accelerations and rotational velocity of movements, and can be used to sense gravity), the software can detect, where a person is pointing, and the exact moment one pinches his fingers together. Thus, there is no need for extra hardware on headsets. The wristband-based technology focuses on haptic feedback that occurs only when the user touches something (fingers pinching, or surface interactions).

The software can be paired with eye tracking. The user can look at the thing he wants to select, and then pinch his fingers to select it.

Earlier, Doublepoint had a name Port6, to keep their invention secret, so competitors would not guess that the company focuses on gesture-enabling AR devices. Currently, the software is patented.

Superangel VC is an Estonian fund that focuses on early-stage investment in the Baltics and Nordics.
